In some hot and wet country (I live in Malaysia), putting medicine in safe deposit boxes in the bathroom may be quite rare because it proved not the best place to store medicines as a bathroom with high humidity and may harm the medicine.

Every medicine has different storage requirements. some medicie become less effective when it is exposed to air, humidity, cold temperatures, hot temperatures or light.

The best way to find the appropriate storage method is to read the instructions or recommendations listed on the label on the medicine bottle or box.

If you do not understand, get this information from pharmacies in clinics, hospitals and at pharmacies when to receive your medication.

Medicine can be divided broadly into two categories:

# The medicine should be stored in refrigerator

# The medicine should be stored at room temperature

Many medicine is stored in the refrigerator door without knowing it really is not an appropriate place although the instructions say that the medicine need to be stored at low temperature.

What should be done is put the medicine in the box and not on the shelf in the fridge door because the temperature is always at the door interrupted every time we open the refrigerator.

Do not put the medicine can be stored at room temperature (tablets or capsules) in the refrigerator. We may assume that the low temperature medicine will last longer, but this assumption is incorrect. Otherwise it may cause the medicine more quickly damaged.

This is because the high humidity in the refrigerator will make the medication package become wet even the package is not opened. When we remove medicine from the refrigerator, the temperature change (cold to hot) will make the internal environment of volatile drugs and affect the quality of medicines.

For those with young children, you can store medication in syrup form, including cough medicine in the refrigerator for six months, although it should be a small bottle but for a single use. Discard medicines that have more than six months.

If kept in the refrigerator, make sure the liquid medicine or syrup shaken before use because the temperature is low, medicine’s content will settle.

However, the kitchen cabinet is not a place suitable for storing medications because of the rate of moisture is higher than other parts of the house.

The most suitable part to put the box in space medicine is to eat as it is usually cooler, dry and away from sunlight.

Among the general guidelines of safe storage of medicines are:

# Always read and understand the instructions on the label carrying drugs.

# Keep medicines in original containers. If it comes in a container sticker (such as the drug paracetamol) do not change into the bottle because it indicates the drug should be stored in a cool and dry. Store it in bottles can reduce the effectiveness of the drug because it is exposed to moisture and air.

# Do not save the few types of drugs in a container.

# Do not store medicines in a number of drugs in plastic bags. Drugs can be broken and reduce its impact.

# Always keep medicines in a dry and cool, and away from the sun.

# Avoid placing the box in place of drugs that have the temperature is too cold (unless directed to do so as the refrigerator. You also need to check whether it should be stored in freezer or cold).

# Do not store medicines in a hot place (including in the car) because the temperature is too hot can damage the active ingredients in medicines.

To prevent poisoning, drugs or other unwanted problems, ensure that medicines are stored away from the reach of children.

As a safeguard, most of the bottle comes with a hard cover is opened by a child but it is not a guarantee it is completely safe when in the hands of little guys.

In addition you also need to understand the meaning of the storage instructions on the box or bottle label such as:

# Cold freezer – Store in a controlled temperature between -20 ° C to -10 ° C

# Fridge – Keep in a controlled temperature between 2 ° C to 8 ° C

# Place cold – temperatures between 8 ° C to 15 ° C

# Room Temperature – Temperature of 15 ° C to 30 ° C

# Warm- temperatures between 30 ° C to 40 ° C

# Hot – temperatures above 40 ° C

# Do not store at temperatures over 30 ° C, storage temperature should be between 2 ° C to 30 ° C

# Do not store at temperatures over 25 ° C – temperature must be within 2 ° C to 25 °

Storage of vitamin pills is not much different for drugs. If you buy large quantities of vitamins, use some (eg, for use in a week) is stored in smaller containers airtight to reduce the risk of impaired quality of vitamin pills by the moisture from the container is opened frequently.
